Standard parts warranties last 1 to 5 years. Compressor warranties often reach 10 years. Read the exclusions carefully. Many void coverage if non-certified technicians perform maintenance. Ask if labor is covered during the warranty period. Most companies only cover parts. You still pay for the technician time to replace the faulty component.
Standard pleated filters trap dust but can restrict airflow if too dense. Ask about the MERV rating. Higher numbers filter more particles but require stronger fans. If the filter clogs, the ice forms on the coils. This shuts down the unit. Choose a grade that balances air quality with the blower motor capacity of your specific installation.
Indoor units should operate below 35 decibels on low speed. Outdoor units are louder. Check the decibel rating in the product manual. Ask where the outdoor unit will sit relative to bedrooms. Proximity to sliding glass doors amplifies sound. Request a demonstration of the loudest setting before finalizing the installation location for your comfort.
Peak summer months cause scheduling delays of 2 to 4 weeks. Book early in spring or late fall. Ask for a written start date. Installers often juggle multiple jobs. If their schedule slips, you lose cooling capability. Confirm the exact arrival window. A full day of waiting disrupts your routine. Get the timeline in writing to hold them accountable.
Ensure the indoor unit has 10 inches of clear space. Technicians need room to access filters and coils. Outdoor units need 2 feet of clearance for airflow. Do not block the condenser coils with plants. Debris buildup suffocates the fan. Poor airflow makes the compressor overheat. Keep the area clean to maintain efficiency and extend equipment life.
Copper lines are standard for durability. Aluminum is cheaper but corrodes faster in high humidity. Ask about the line set diameter. Mismatched diameters restrict refrigerant flow. Poor flow reduces cooling efficiency. It also increases pressure on the compressor. Always request a quote that specifies the exact material and gauge used.
The outdoor unit needs a solid concrete pad or vibration isolators. If it vibrates, noise transfers into your walls and floors. Ask about the mounting hardware used. Rubber pads or steel brackets reduce rattling. An unstable base damages the internal components over time, shortening the life of the expensive compressor part.
Condensate water needs a clear exit path. Check for a gravity drain or pump. Gravity drains are cheaper but require slope. Pumps add reliability but need power. Ask where the water exits. Directing it onto foundations causes erosion. Verify the drain line has a trap to prevent insects entering the indoor unit ductwork.
Many companies offer a 10-year parts warranty, but labor is often only 1 year. Ask specifically what is covered if the compressor fails at month 11. Does the warranty require annual service calls to remain valid? Read the fine print. Some policies void the guarantee if you use non-OEM filters or hire outside technicians for maintenance repairs later on.
Test every button on the remote before the technician leaves. Check the display backlight. Verify the sleep timer functions. Ensure the fan speed changes respond instantly. Ask about smartphone app compatibility. Some older models lack Wi-Fi modules. Buying a smart hub later may be necessary if you want remote control access from outside the home.
