Water from the indoor coil must drain safely away from your house. Ask for a slope of at least 1/8 inch per foot. Horizontal runs cause backups and mold growth. Some units include a float switch to shut off the system if water overflows. Confirm where the drain exits the house to avoid flooding your basement or crawlspace during heavy use.
Air conditioners range from 40 to 60 decibels at the compressor. Ask for the outdoor unit noise level. A louder unit is disruptive if placed near bedroom windows. Ask about fan speed settings. Low speed reduces noise but cools slower. High speed handles heat spikes but gets loud. Choose a model that fits your neighborhood noise tolerance.
Copper lines are standard for durability. Aluminum is cheaper but corrodes faster in high humidity. Ask about the line set diameter. Mismatched diameters restrict refrigerant flow. Poor flow reduces cooling efficiency. It also increases pressure on the compressor. Always request a quote that specifies the exact material and gauge used.
Standard parts warranties last 1 to 5 years. Compressor warranties often reach 10 years. Read the exclusions carefully. Many void coverage if non-certified technicians perform maintenance. Ask if labor is covered during the warranty period. Most companies only cover parts. You still pay for the technician time to replace the faulty component.
A standard split system takes 4 to 8 hours to install. Multi-zone systems require 1 to 2 days. Ask for a start and finish time. Delays often happen due to missing permits or material shortages. Confirm if the crew works on weekends. Some professionals charge premium rates for weekend work. Get the schedule in writing to avoid confusion.
Check that the refrigerant lines are pure copper, not aluminum. Copper resists corrosion better and lasts longer. Look for proper insulation on the suction line to prevent sweating. Poor insulation leads to water damage on ceilings. The lines must be clean inside to avoid debris blocking the valve during operation.
Many companies offer a 10-year parts warranty, but labor is often only 1 year. Ask specifically what is covered if the compressor fails at month 11. Does the warranty require annual service calls to remain valid? Read the fine print. Some policies void the guarantee if you use non-OEM filters or hire outside technicians for maintenance repairs later on.
Peak summer months cause scheduling delays of 2 to 4 weeks. Book early in spring or late fall. Ask for a written start date. Installers often juggle multiple jobs. If their schedule slips, you lose cooling capability. Confirm the exact arrival window. A full day of waiting disrupts your routine. Get the timeline in writing to hold them accountable.
Wall brackets must support the outdoor unit weight. Concrete anchors are safer than drywall screws. Ask if the bracket includes vibration dampeners. Without them, noise travels through the wall structure. Check the bracket finish. Powder-coated steel resists rust better than plain zinc plated options for long term outdoor exposure.
Basic filters catch large dust particles. Advanced filters trap allergens and fine mold spores. Ask for specific micron ratings. Lower micron numbers mean finer filtration. Some filters require replacement every 3 months. Others last 12 months. Use the correct size. A loose fit lets unfiltered air bypass the system entirely.
