Standard pleated filters trap dust but can restrict airflow if too dense. Ask about the MERV rating. Higher numbers filter more particles but require stronger fans. If the filter clogs, the ice forms on the coils. This shuts down the unit. Choose a grade that balances air quality with the blower motor capacity of your specific installation.
Air conditioners range from 40 to 60 decibels at the compressor. Ask for the outdoor unit noise level. A louder unit is disruptive if placed near bedroom windows. Ask about fan speed settings. Low speed reduces noise but cools slower. High speed handles heat spikes but gets loud. Choose a model that fits your neighborhood noise tolerance.
Local codes often require permits for new HVAC installations. Ask if the contractor pulls these independently. Unpermitted work can fail future home inspections. It also voids insurance claims if damage occurs. Permits ensure the installation meets safety standards. The cost is usually small but mandatory. Never let a worker bypass this legal step to save a few dollars.
Copper lines are standard for durability. Aluminum is cheaper but corrodes faster in high humidity. Ask about the line set diameter. Mismatched diameters restrict refrigerant flow. Poor flow reduces cooling efficiency. It also increases pressure on the compressor. Always request a quote that specifies the exact material and gauge used.
Most split systems need a dedicated 220V circuit. Older homes may lack proper wiring. Ask if the electrician upgrade is included in the quote. If not, budget for a separate electrician. Verify the breaker size matches the unit manual. Incorrect wiring trips breakers or damages the compressor controller board immediately upon startup.
Standard parts warranties last 1 to 5 years. Compressor warranties often reach 10 years. Read the exclusions carefully. Many void coverage if non-certified technicians perform maintenance. Ask if labor is covered during the warranty period. Most companies only cover parts. You still pay for the technician time to replace the faulty component.
Test every button on the remote before the technician leaves. Check the display backlight. Verify the sleep timer functions. Ensure the fan speed changes respond instantly. Ask about smartphone app compatibility. Some older models lack Wi-Fi modules. Buying a smart hub later may be necessary if you want remote control access from outside the home.
A standard split system takes 4 to 8 hours to install. Multi-zone systems require 1 to 2 days. Ask for a start and finish time. Delays often happen due to missing permits or material shortages. Confirm if the crew works on weekends. Some professionals charge premium rates for weekend work. Get the schedule in writing to avoid confusion.
Ensure the indoor unit has 10 inches of clear space. Technicians need room to access filters and coils. Outdoor units need 2 feet of clearance for airflow. Do not block the condenser coils with plants. Debris buildup suffocates the fan. Poor airflow makes the compressor overheat. Keep the area clean to maintain efficiency and extend equipment life.
Check that the refrigerant lines are pure copper, not aluminum. Copper resists corrosion better and lasts longer. Look for proper insulation on the suction line to prevent sweating. Poor insulation leads to water damage on ceilings. The lines must be clean inside to avoid debris blocking the valve during operation.
