Sturdy concrete footings are essential for safety. Posts must be set at least 600 mm deep in the ground. The concrete mix must cure for 28 days before the motor is installed. Rushing this step causes the motor mount to crack. Ask the installer how many days they will wait for curing.
Decide between sliding and swinging gates before hiring. Sliding gates need a level path of at least 10 times the gate width. Swinging gates require clear space for hinges and operators. Ask the installer to measure your existing property boundaries. They must check for underground utilities before digging any post holes.
Ensure the installer leaves a 20 cm service gap around the motor. This allows for future repairs. Ask where the manual release key is stored. Provide a spare key to a trusted neighbor. Check if the control panel has an easy-to-read LED status display. Clear error codes help you diagnose issues before calling a technician.
Measure the ground slope behind the gate path. A 5% grade is maximum for most motors. Steeper slopes increase motor load. Install a drain if water pools. Standing water corrodes the track. Ask about gravel ballast for sliding gates. Proper drainage prevents ice buildup in winter.
Decide where the main control box sits. It must be indoors or in a weatherproof enclosure. Keep it away from direct sunlight. Ensure easy access for troubleshooting. Ask about the backup battery life. A 6-hour battery is typical. Check if the panel supports key fobs or smartphone apps for remote access.
For sliding gates, inspect the steel track thickness. A 3 mm thickness is standard for residential use. Thinner tracks bend easily under stress. Ask about the rail mounting method. Surface mount requires precise leveling. Embedded tracks need concrete pouring. Check for corrosion resistance on all steel components.
Request the motor datasheet for your specific gate weight. A 200 kg gate needs a higher torque motor than a 50 kg one. Ask about the duty cycle rating. Ensure the motor fits the gate type, sliding or swinging. Check if the motor includes a manual release mechanism for power outages.
Price varies based on gate size and material. Electric vehicle chargers near the gate add cost. Complex terrain requires more excavation. Terrain slope above 5% increases motor size needs. Ask for an itemized quote. Hidden costs often appear in electrical work or excavation. Get all potential extras in writing upfront.
Typical installation takes 2 to 5 days. This includes excavation, concrete work, and motor setup. Weather can delay concrete curing significantly. Ask for a detailed schedule. Delays happen if subcontractors miss dates. Confirm who manages the timeline. You need a single point of contact for updates.
Poor drainage ruins sliding gate tracks. Water pools can freeze in winter or wash away gravel. The installer must grade the ground properly. Ensure water flows away from the gate path. Ask about bottom seals for the gate leaf. This prevents mud and debris from entering the track mechanism.
