Do not trust marketing terms for blackout performance. Ask for the solar heat gain coefficient or thermal resistance value. Some fabrics block light but not heat. Look for dual-layer construction with a tight weave. Confirm the material meets specific energy efficiency standards. This affects your heating and cooling bills significantly during extreme weather seasons.
Ask for the gram weight per square meter of curtain fabric. Heavier weaves provide better insulation and sound dampening. Thin voiles block less light but fit narrow brackets. Confirm the material resists fading if placed near south-facing windows. Request physical samples to assess texture and drape before committing to a purchase.
Decide between inside placement and outside placement. Inside mounts fit within the window recess. Outside mounts cover the wall above the frame. Outside placement blocks more light but reduces natural daylight. Ensure you have at least 5 cm of wall space above the window for outside brackets. This choice impacts overall visual width.
If installing on a tilted wall, ask how the frame will adhere. Use a level to check for uneven surfaces. A crooked installation causes gaps and prevents smooth operation. The installer should bring shims or adjustable brackets to compensate for minor structural irregularities in your home. Verify this support method in the contract.
Base quotes often exclude hardware like tilt cords or wand mechanisms. Motorized options add significant expense. Header brackets and side channels cost extra. Ask if removal of old treatments is included. Disposal fees sometimes apply for bulky items. Request an itemized quote to reveal all additional line items clearly before payment.
Ask what size screws and anchors the installer uses for drywall versus brick. Thin walls require specific anchors to prevent bracket pull-out. Heavy curtain rods need deep hold. Verify the installer brings appropriate fasteners for your specific wall material. Missing or incorrect anchors are a common cause of falling hardware later on.
Dust slats every 2 weeks with a duster. Vacuum sheer curtains gently on low settings. Use mild soap for fabric cleaning. Avoid harsh chemicals that strip finishes. Test cleaners on a hidden area first. Misguided wiping fades colors permanently. Proper care maintains texture and color vibrancy over several years of use.
Inspect how the end caps seal the sliding track. Loose caps allow dust and lint to enter the mechanism. This causes friction and eventual failure. Demand tight-fitting caps made of durable plastic or metal. Ask about replacement parts availability. A simple cap issue can ruin a premium curtain setup by trapping debris inside the gear system.
Minor cord fraying can be repaired with splicing. Broken bend mechanisms usually need replacement. Torn fabric requires professional re-stitching or replacement. Check warranty terms for in-store repairs. Keep original packaging labels for identification. Small fixes cost less than full replacement. Prompt attention prevents larger functional failures later in time.
Fabric blinds fade faster in west-facing rooms due to direct sunlight. Choose blackout materials for better light control. Aluminum slats resist humidity better than wood. Vinyl is affordable but brittle in cold weather. Ask about UV protection coatings. Material choice affects both appearance and lifespan significantly for your specific location.
