Ask how they handle damaged bricks during transport. Broken units need immediate replacement. Patching with inferior material creates weak spots. Demand a protocol for on-site breakage. The pro should keep spare stock nearby. Check if they match the texture of old bricks. Repairs must blend seamlessly. Ask for a written guarantee on replacements. Hidden defects appear months later. You need a contact for fixes.
Brick walls need airflow to prevent mold. Ask about the size of weep holes at the bottom. These small gaps let trapped water escape. A pro leaves a 12 mm opening at intervals. Blocked vents cause dampness to rise into the plaster. Check how they protect these holes during construction. Debris easily falls in. Ask for a final cleaning of every single opening.
Define what qualifies the project as complete. Check for sharp edges or chipped bricks. Verify all mortar is cured properly. Walk the site with the contractor. Note any discrepancies immediately. Do not sign off until issues are resolved. Keep a list of final touches needed before payment.
Clarify who orders and receives materials. Bricks are heavy and fragile. Ask if delivery fees are included in the quote. Check if the site has space for stacking materials safely. Improper storage ruins bricks before use. Confirm the delivery schedule matches the work start date.
Agree on a realistic timeline before signing the contract. Weather delays can push back curing times. Ask how many days they allocate for each section. Clarify what happens if rain stops work. Vague schedules lead to disputes. Get the start and end dates in writing.
Bricklaying creates significant dust and rubble. Ask where the waste goes daily. Do not let piles build up near entrances. This creates tripping hazards. Confirm if they include dumpster rental in the quote. Extra trips cost money. Ask about dust control measures. Wetting the area reduces airborne particles. Protect your lawn from falling shards. A clean site reflects a professional operation. Sloppy cleanup hides skill gaps.
Brick shades vary significantly between batches. Order extra units from the same batch. Ask the mason to mix batches on-site. Blending different tones prevents obvious color stripes. Look at the sample wall in afternoon light. Colors shift as the sun moves. Ask about the curing process effect on shade. Some bricks darken slightly after drying. Confirm the final look before full completion.
Look for sharp, clean cuts on corner pieces. A skilled mason uses a wet saw for precise angles. Chipped edges collect water and freeze quickly. Look for gaps larger than 10 mm between cut pieces. Uneven cuts make the wall look messy. Ask if they use a template for repetitive cuts. Precision here saves you from repainting the entire facade later. Sloppy cuts ruin the aesthetic.
Ask who removes broken bricks and excess mortar. Debris piles create tripping hazards and attract pests. Confirm if disposal costs are in the quote. Specify where waste goes daily. A clean site shows professionalism and safety awareness. Do not leave cleanup to chance after completion.
Discuss how water will drain away from the new wall. Ask about damp-proof courses or flashing details. Ensure the top edge sheds water correctly. Poor drainage causes rot and stain damage later. Verify the plan addresses specific local weather patterns effectively.
