Look for uniform joint widths between bricks. Standard joints usually measure 10 mm. Uneven gaps indicate poor technique or rushed work. Ask the mason to point joints cleanly. Sloppy pointing lets water in easily. Consistent joints show attention to detail and structural integrity.
Confirm the exact brick dimensions and material. Clay bricks differ from concrete blocks in weight and absorption. Check if the bricks are fired or extruded. Ask about the face quality if the wall is visible. Poor quality bricks crumble quickly. Ensure the supplier matches the project requirements exactly.
Inspect the existing foundation before starting any wall work. Look for cracks wider than 3 mm or uneven settling. A solid base prevents future structural failure. Ask the bricklayer to verify the ground bearing capacity. If the soil shifts, the new wall will crack. Do not ignore minor settling signs early on.
Agree on a single point of contact. Daily site visits cause confusion. Ask for a scheduled update time. Phone calls mid-project disrupt workflow. Request photo evidence of progress. This saves you from driving by frequently. If you are away, trust the visuals. Establish a rule for urgent issues. Silence generates anxiety. Clear communication prevents small problems from becoming major conflicts later.
Ask how they handle damaged bricks during transport. Broken units need immediate replacement. Patching with inferior material creates weak spots. Demand a protocol for on-site breakage. The pro should keep spare stock nearby. Check if they match the texture of old bricks. Repairs must blend seamlessly. Ask for a written guarantee on replacements. Hidden defects appear months later. You need a contact for fixes.
Never pay the full amount upfront. Split payments by completed sections. Ask for specific deliverables for each release. For example, pay after the foundation layer cures. Withholding funds gives you leverage. If bricklaying stops, you stop paying. Ask for a detailed invoice. Vague line items hide extra costs. Keep cash reserves for unexpected repairs. Protect your financial stake throughout the project.
Brick walls need airflow to prevent mold. Ask about the size of weep holes at the bottom. These small gaps let trapped water escape. A pro leaves a 12 mm opening at intervals. Blocked vents cause dampness to rise into the plaster. Check how they protect these holes during construction. Debris easily falls in. Ask for a final cleaning of every single opening.
Mortar needs time to harden properly. Ask how many days they wait before stacking materials on fresh walls. Rushing this step traps moisture inside. You will see white salt stains appearing on the surface weeks later. The pro must let each section dry naturally. Rushed work leads to brittle joints. Ask about their daily drying checklist. Ignore anyone who skips this phase.
Define what qualifies the project as complete. Check for sharp edges or chipped bricks. Verify all mortar is cured properly. Walk the site with the contractor. Note any discrepancies immediately. Do not sign off until issues are resolved. Keep a list of final touches needed before payment.
Request proof of liability insurance before work begins. Accidents happen on job sites daily. Verify the policy covers property damage and injuries. Do not hire an uninsured professional. Check the policy number directly with the provider. This protects you from financial liability for mistakes.
