Outdoor cameras need IP66 or IP67 ratings for dust and water resistance. Lower ratings fail during heavy rain. Check cable entry points for proper sealing. Moisture ingress causes internal corrosion and eventual failure. Ask if the installer uses waterproof junction boxes. These protect connection points from element exposure, significantly extending the lifespan of your equipment.
High sensitivity causes false alarms from shadows or insects. Low sensitivity misses real intruders. Ask how zones are configured. You should be able to exclude areas like swaying tree branches. Adjust sensitivity per camera. This reduces notification fatigue. Test the system after setup to ensure alerts match actual movement patterns rather than ambient environmental changes.
Standard lenses shatter easily if targeted. Ask about anti-vandal domes or bullet housings. These resist impacts from thrown objects. Placement matters significantly. Mount cameras above head height to prevent direct reach. Review housing material thickness. Polycarbonate lenses offer better impact resistance than glass. This simple detail prevents costly replacements after minor incidents or prank attempts.
Small systems take 1 to 2 days. Larger setups require 3 to 5 days. Ask for a specific start date. Delays often come from cable path approvals. Confirm if drilling is included. Exterior work depends on weather. Get the schedule in writing. Clear timelines prevent indefinite waiting. Ask what happens if access is blocked, so you understand responsibility for potential project extensions.
Ask for minimum 2 megapixels per camera. Lower resolution blurs faces at distance. Higher resolution creates larger file sizes. Too many cameras on a slow network lag. Verify if the system supports 4K. If not, 1080p is standard for homes. Match the resolution to your storage capacity. Do not buy high resolution if your hard drive is too small.
Ask if cameras use Power over Ethernet. This sends data and power through one cable. It simplifies installation. Standalone cameras need separate power adapters. Adapters fail more often. They get hot in direct sun. PoE is generally more reliable for long-term use. Confirm the switch supports PoE standards. Not all switches do.
Check the infrared range for each camera. Standard IR lights work up to 20 meters. For wider areas, you need spotlights or higher wattage IR. Ask about color night vision. It requires ambient light. Pure IR is black and white. Test the footage at night before final sign-off. Ensure the installer adjusts the IR cut filter correctly.
Mount cameras 2.5 to 3 meters high. This prevents tampering. Aim them slightly downward. Angles too high show only back of heads. Angles too low show too much ground. Ask the installer to point the lens at the target area. Avoid pointing directly at bright lights. Glare ruins the image sensor. Adjust angles during the final walkthrough.
Ask what happens during a power cut. Most systems stop recording when power dies. Some have battery backups. These last only 30 to 60 minutes. Ask if they can add a battery pack. This extends recording time slightly. Without backup, thieves can cut power. They then delete footage. Consider a small UPS for the main unit.
Inspect every camera before signing off. Check for blur. Check focus. Ensure night vision works. Verify all cables are taped down. Loose cables flap in wind. They vibrate and break connectors. Test motion detection zones. Adjust sensitivity to ignore pets. Cars trigger false alarms. Set exclusion zones for busy streets. This reduces unnecessary alerts.
