The area gets around 971 mm of rain per year. Shorncote sits at about 95 m above sea level. The climate in Shorncote averages 10.5°C a year, with January around 4.4°C and July near 16.5°C.
Foam filling the entire gap stops the frame from moving with temperature changes. Packers left behind under the sill create cold bridges. Silicone applied over dirty trim peels within months. Ask the fitter how they seal the perimeter and how they pack the frame before screwing it in.
Choose the frame style to match your wall opening. Casement frames swing open, tilt-and-turn frames tilt in, and fixed frames do not open. Check the reveal depth in millimetres so the frame sits flush with plaster. Ask the fitter to confirm the wall makeup before ordering a profile.
External door thresholds should sit 15 mm above the finished floor to keep out driving rain. Low thresholds look neat but need a proper drip groove underneath. Ask the fitter to show the drainage path and the silicone seal at the sill before they fix the frame in place.
Damp patches near the head or sill often point to a broken bridge in the frame, not the wall. Run your hand along the reveal and feel for cold spots. Ask the fitter to drill a small inspection hole in the frame cavity and confirm the insulation is continuous.
New frames often leave a 10 to 20 mm gap around the perimeter that needs filling. Ask whether the quote includes making good the plaster or just the foam and silicone seal. Photograph the wall before work starts so any cracks afterwards are easy to pin on the fitter.
Double glazing is now the baseline for most homes. Triple glazing drops heat loss more but adds weight and cost. Low-E coatings and argon gas fill raise the U-value rating. Laminated glass blocks noise near busy roads. Ask for the exact U-value and glass thickness before signing anything.
Condensation inside the glass means the seal is gone. Drafts around the edges point to broken gaskets or warped timber. Soft black spots on sills show water has pooled for months. Stiff handles and cracked putty mean the unit is past repair and replacement is the safer choice now.
Newer windows must include trickle vents or a mechanical extractor to meet building rules. Removing them causes mould and stale air, even with double glazing. Keep trickle vents open in kitchens and bathrooms. The 2-position slider lets you regulate airflow without leaving the window cracked open.
Open and close every sash before the team leaves. Look for even gaps of 3 to 5 mm around the frame. Run a damp finger along seals to find air leaks. Check sills with a spirit level. Water-test doors with a hose for 10 minutes before signing the completion form.
The U-value measures heat loss through the whole unit, frame plus glass. Lower numbers mean better insulation. A standard double-glazed unit sits around 1.4, while better options drop to 1.0 or below. Ask the supplier for the certified U-value for the exact frame and glass combination you order.
